THE
4X4 ECO CHALLENGE
...Our
journey begins in Cape Town and then we head northwards in our
Mitsubishi Pajero, kindly provided to us by paarl Motors. The
Pajero handles superbly and before we know it we pull into Upington,
like two cowboys on a mission. No, we don't tie up our feisty
Pajero outside the closest saloon but rather head for La Boheme,
our preferred overnight holding, as we try to get into the right
frame of mind for what lies ahead.
As the venue for the semi-finals is about two hours
(depends on what you're driving as it could be an hour) north
of Upington contestants have to report there in the middle of
the afternoon. So an overnight stop is probably advisable for
those of you who still have to do the semi-finals. Our host Evelyne
Meier treats us like royalty and her luxury guesthouse has such
a relaxing karma we almost forget to practice our tire-changing
routine drills or discuss team strategies for what lies ahead.
With lovely views over the Orange River valley and an almost full
moon rising over the horizon who can blame us? ...

Place to stay: Upington / La Boheme
La
Boheme is a blissful retreat that celebrates contrasts in a land
of contrasts. I stayed in the Deluxe Garden Room which has a comfortable
built-in king size bed and a door that leads out into the spacious
garden. We took all meals at the guesthouse and would definitely
recommend this. This is definitely one of the finest guesthouses
we have stayed in.
