La Bohème / Accommodation

The spirit of the Gypsies is alive and well and living in La Bohème guesthouse in Upington. After all, it's the same spirit that brought Evelyne Meier from southern Switzerland to the Northern Cape town and a new way of life.

"From the time I was a child I dreamt of palm trees and wide-open spaces," Evelyne told me, "and I've traveled all over the world as a result. But I always returned to Europe. Then I heard that a family friend who had retired to Upington needed someone to help her with her guesthouse. I phoned the friend on Monday, spoke to my boss on the Tuesday, booked my ticket on the Wednesday and was on my way within a month. And here I've stayed. I guess I've called this place La Bohème because I have this gypsy spirit of living in the moment.

"Upington has everything," she continues, "breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, unspoilt nature, plains stretching as far as the eye can see - it gave me such a feeling of space and liberty after Europe . Best of all, I can walk around barefoot all day."

Evelyne has found the perfect place for her guesthouse. It's perched on a hill and gives superb views of the Orange river valley and the Kalahari, stretching away forever.

'To spoil people with good food and music and to forget about tomorrow' is Evelyne's philosophy, and to achieve it she ensures that every room at La Bohème has everything the discerning guest could want or need.

As far as the food is concerned, Evelyne says, "I cook the way the spirit takes me, though obviously taking my guests' likes and dislikes into consideration. During my travels I learnt to enjoy food from all over the world, and I like to have theme evenings, French food one day, Italian the next and so on."
